The Simple Seasonal Storage Checklist Every Collector Needs
3:16

When the temps dip or the heat gets brutal, smart collectors don’t gamble, they store their rides the right way. Whether you’re stashing a rare Shelby Cobra, a restomod Camaro, or a pristine Porsche 911, proper seasonal storage isn’t optional. It’s insurance for your investment.

Protect Your Investment-Grade Vehicles the Right Way

Here’s a straight-to-the-point checklist every collector should run through before parking anything long-term.

1. Clean It - Inside and Out

Dirt, dust, and road grime can wreak havoc on finishes, especially if left to bake or sit. Before storage, give your vehicle:

  • A full exterior wash and dry

  • Undercarriage rinse (especially in salty areas)

  • Interior vacuum and wipe down

  • Leather treatment or UV protectant where needed

Pro tip: A coat of quality wax goes a long way during storage.

2. Top Off Fluids

Check and fill:

  • Fuel tank (with stabilizer added)

  • Engine oil (fresh oil is best before storing)

  • Coolant

  • Brake fluid

  • Transmission and differential fluids if overdue

Fluids break down over time. Dirty oil, in particular, can become acidic and damage internals. Keep it clean before you park it.

Engine Maintenance3. Battery Maintenance

You’ve got two good options:

  • Disconnect the battery (if you don’t need to maintain electronics), or

  • Use a battery tender - a smart charger that keeps voltage right without overcharging

Avoid dead cells and replacements in spring by keeping the juice flowing properly.

4. Tires: Inflate and Protect

Inflate tires to the upper end of their PSI range. If your vehicle will sit more than 30 days, consider:

  • Parking on tire cradles

  • Using jack stands to relieve weight

  • Rolling the vehicle slightly every few weeks to prevent flat spots

High-dollar wheels deserve high-level care.

5. Block Pests and Moisture

Rodents love warm engines and untouched interiors. Use:

  • Steel wool or mesh in exhaust tips and air inlets

  • Dryer sheets or scent deterrents inside

  • Moisture-absorbing desiccant packs in the cabin and trunk

Your upholstery (and wiring harness) will thank you.

Car Cover6. Cover Smart

A cheap cover can scratch your paint. Use:

  • A high-quality, breathable car cover for indoor use

  • Waterproof + vented options for outdoor use

  • No tarp shortcuts, it traps moisture and causes rot

Bonus: consider a full car capsule or bubble system for ultra-rare rides.

7. Don’t Forget Documentation

Before you walk away, document the odometer reading, take photos, and keep records of all prep work. This isn't just smart, it helps preserve value and supports provenance down the road.

Storage Done Right = Value Preserved

Collectors know: the market rewards condition, originality, and care. Seasonal storage is where you either protect that or lose ground.

At HotRod Collection, every vehicle we own is stored, maintained, and prepped with this same mindset. Because when you deal in investment-grade vehicles, shortcuts don’t cut it.
